Japanese miniature in the netsuke style

A finely carved sculpture depicting a seated man in a traditional kimono. In one hand he holds a scroll, in the other a cup. The scene evokes a moment of everyday life in the Edo period, with a character featuring an expressive face and a subtle smile.
The figurine stands out for the richness of its details: the kimono is decorated with finely worked floral and geometric motifs with coloured inlays. The contrast between the light face and the dark garment highlights the delicacy of the carving.
Netsuke were traditionally produced in Japan during the 18th–19th centuries. Originally, they served as functional counterweights used to suspend an inrō from the sash of a kimono. Over time, they became true works of art sought after by collectors.
